The Challenge
Sarah came to us at one of the most difficult periods of her life. Having recently received an MS diagnosis, she was struggling not only with the physical symptoms but also with the emotional impact of her condition. Like many newly diagnosed patients, Sarah faced significant delays accessing NHS physiotherapy services, leaving her feeling unsupported during a crucial time.
Her primary physical concerns centred around weakness in her left arm, which was significantly impacting her daily activities. Simple tasks that she had previously taken for granted – styling her hair, using cutlery during meals, and carrying everyday items – had become sources of frustration and difficulty. Perhaps more concerning was the psychological impact: Sarah had begun hiding her affected arm, either sitting on it or tucking it behind her back, hoping others wouldn’t notice her difficulties.
Compounding these challenges, Margaret had turned to the internet to learn more about MS but had unfortunately encountered information that left her feeling frightened and pessimistic about her future prospects.
Our Approach
Through our long-standing partnership with Bury and North Manchester MS Society, which kindly funds three initial sessions for newly diagnosed individuals, we were able to provide Margaret with immediate, specialist support in the comfort of her own home.
Our intervention focused on two key areas:
Education and Understanding: We worked with Margaret to develop a more balanced and realistic understanding of MS, addressing her fears and misconceptions while providing evidence-based information about the condition and its management.
Functional Improvement: We developed a tailored exercise programme specifically designed to target her upper limb weakness and improve hand function. These exercises were carefully selected to be manageable within her home environment and to progress appropriately with her improving abilities.
The Outcome
Margaret’s response to our intervention was encouraging on multiple levels. Most notably, we observed measurable improvements in her hand function, with increased strength and dexterity that translated directly into improved performance of daily activities.
Equally important was the transformation in Margaret’s confidence and outlook. As her physical function improved and her understanding of MS became more realistic and hopeful, she began to feel more optimistic about managing her condition long-term.
The value Margaret found in our service was demonstrated by her decision to continue with self-funded sessions beyond the initial three funded appointments, bridging the gap until her NHS physiotherapy became available. This continuity of care ensured that the progress made during the initial intervention was maintained and built upon.
Margaret is now successfully supported by her NHS physiotherapy team and continues to make positive progress in managing her MS.

- Improved upper limb strength and hand function
- Enhanced ability to perform daily activities independently
- Increased confidence and reduced anxiety about her diagnosis
- Better understanding of MS and realistic expectations for management
