Working with Adults with Cerebral Palsy for a Lifetime of Change

Cerebral Palsy (CP) is often thought of as a childhood condition, yet many people living with CP are adults navigating the long-term effects of the condition across their lifespan. At SP Therapy Services, we understand that the physical challenges associated with CP don’t simply end with childhood. In fact, as individuals with CP age, new and evolving needs often arise — and physiotherapy can play a key role in helping them maintain function, independence, and quality of life.

Understanding Cerebral Palsy in Adults

Cerebral Palsy is a neurological condition caused by damage to the developing brain, often before, during, or shortly after birth. It affects movement, coordination, muscle tone, and posture. While the brain injury is not progressive, its impact can change over time, particularly as people age and the body adapts — or struggles to adapt — to the lifelong condition.

Adults with CP may experience:

  • Increased muscle stiffness or spasticity
  • Joint pain or early onset arthritis
  • Fatigue and decreased endurance
  • Challenges with mobility, balance, or falls
  • Muscle weakness and postural changes
  • Secondary complications such as scoliosis or hip issues

The Role of Physiotherapy in Adulthood

At SP Therapy Services, our community-based neurological physiotherapists work closely with adults with Cerebral Palsy to provide tailored support in their own environments — at home, in supported accommodation, or out in the community. We recognise that every individual’s presentation and goals are unique, and our physiotherapy plans reflect this.

Key areas we support include:

1. Maintaining and Improving Mobility

As mobility can decline with age or changes in muscle tone, physiotherapy focuses on joint flexibility, muscle strength, and efficient movement patterns. We use functional goal setting — whether it’s walking with more confidence, improving transfers, or returning to hobbies — to guide the therapy process.

2. Managing Spasticity and Pain

Spasticity can worsen over time, particularly if untreated. Our physiotherapists are skilled in passive stretches, positioning techniques, and active exercises that help reduce muscle tightness and prevent contractures. We also support clients in using orthotics or equipment to manage spasticity-related discomfort.

3. Fall Prevention and Balance Training

Balance issues in adults with CP can lead to falls and loss of confidence. Our work often includes gait analysis, coordination training, and environmental assessments to reduce fall risk. We may also recommend adaptive devices and work with occupational therapists to create safer home setups.

4. Energy Conservation and Fatigue Management

Fatigue is a common issue for adults with CP, especially when daily tasks require extra physical effort. We offer pacing strategies, posture and breathing exercises, and interventions to improve energy efficiency and prevent overexertion.

5. Supporting Independence and Function

Our ultimate goal is to support meaningful, real-world goals. From using public transport to preparing meals or engaging in social activities, we work alongside clients and their support networks to develop practical physiotherapy interventions that help them live more independently.

Collaborating with Case Managers and Support Teams

SP Therapy Services works extensively with case managers and solicitors supporting adults with CP through litigation or long-term care planning. We provide timely assessments, comprehensive reports with SMART goals, and regular updates on progress and costings. This collaborative approach ensures that every aspect of the client’s rehabilitation journey is documented and tailored to their needs.

A Lifelong Approach to Therapy

Working with adults with Cerebral Palsy means recognising the complexity of ageing with a childhood-onset disability. It’s about meeting people where they are — literally and figuratively — and offering expert care that evolves with them over time. Our physiotherapists support adults across Bury, Bradford, Holmfirth, Barnsley, Blackburn, Stalybridge, and surrounding areas.

I am the Chair/Co-ordinator of Bolton Neuro Voices, a small local charity. I first contacted SP Therapy Services in 2012 when I was looking for a neuro physiotherapist to help us pilot a new Hydrotheraoy Course for people with long-term neurological conditions. Since then Susan Pattison and her staff have helped us to deliver ten courses to a total of more than 200 people and to facilitate the progress of many on to ongoing Continuation Programmes. Her expertise and willingness to listen and respond to our needs and those of our very varied participants is hugely appreciated and our partnership has gone from strength to strength. I unreservedly recommend this practice.
