What is a Stroke?

A stroke occurs when the blood supply to part of the brain is disrupted, leading to brain cell damage. The effects of a stroke depend on the area of the brain affected and may include:

  • Muscle weakness or paralysis (often on one side)
  • Loss of coordination and balance
  • Spasticity (increased muscle tone and stiffness)
  • Reduced sensation or numbness
  • Fatigue and reduced stamina
  • Speech, swallowing or cognitive difficulties

Every person’s recovery journey is unique. Physiotherapy plays a vital role in maximising functional recovery, restoring movement, and preventing long-term complications after stroke.

  • Our Approach to Stroke Physiotherapy

We offer individualised, goal-focused rehabilitation to support each client’s personal recovery plan. Our approach includes:

    • Gait retraining to improve walking, balance, and confidence
    • Strengthening exercises to rebuild muscle control and prevent deconditioning
    • Tone management and stretching to address spasticity
    • Fatigue management strategies to pace activity levels
    • Falls prevention strategies and safe transfers
    • Rebuilding independence in daily activities and community access

We focus on both physical improvement and practical day-to-day function — helping clients regain confidence to safely move around the home, engage with family life, and return to valued activities.

  • How does physiotherapy help people who have suffered a stroke?
Physiotherapy enables people to relearn lost abilities, regain independence and reduce the risk of further strokes. Our specialist neurological physiotherapists encouraged and actively participate in the rehabilitation of stroke patients and work closely with care teams on the patient’s road to recovery.
  • Supporting Clients at Home

Home-based rehabilitation allows us to address real-life challenges directly within the client’s environment. This means:

    • Practising safe transfers on actual chairs, stairs or beds at home
    • Walking practice indoors and outdoors
    • Adapting therapy to the client’s personal routines and daily challenges
    • Avoiding travel fatigue and clinic-based barriers to access

Our approach reduces disruption and helps therapy remain consistent, flexible, and focused on functional outcomes that matter to the client.

  • Who We Work With

    We regularly support:

    • Adults recovering after stroke
    • Families and carers seeking community-based physiotherapy at home
    • Case Managers coordinating rehabilitation and care packages
    • Solicitors involved in clinical negligence or personal injury cases
    • NHS and Social Care professionals requiring additional specialist input

We provide transparent pricing, comprehensive clinical reports, SMART goal planning, and regular progress updates to support effective case management and funding reviews.

About SP Therapy Services

Reviews

Marie Oxtoby

I am the Chair/Co-ordinator of Bolton Neuro Voices, a small local charity. I first contacted SP Therapy Services in 2012 when I was looking for a neuro physiotherapist to help us pilot a new Hydrotheraoy Course for people with long-term neurological conditions. Since then Susan Pattison and her staff have helped us to deliver ten courses to a total of more than 200 people and to facilitate the progress of many on to ongoing Continuation Programmes. Her expertise and willingness to listen and respond to our needs and those of our very varied participants is hugely appreciated and our partnership has gone from strength to strength. I unreservedly recommend this practice.

Andy provided a very thorough and considered physiotherapy assessment of a client with complex needs. His report was to a very high standard and underpinned all immediate and long term therapy needs. Thank you!
