What is a Spinal Cord Injury?
A spinal cord injury occurs when damage to the spinal cord disrupts communication between the brain and body. This can result from trauma (such as road traffic accidents, falls, or sports injuries), or medical conditions such as tumours or infections. Depending on the level and severity of the injury, symptoms may include:
- Paralysis (complete or partial loss of movement)
- Reduced or absent sensation
- Spasticity (muscle stiffness and spasms)
- Balance and postural difficulties
- Loss of bowel, bladder, or sexual function
- Fatigue and reduced stamina
Every spinal cord injury is unique, and rehabilitation needs to be highly personalised to support each individual’s goals, potential, and quality of life.

- What is a Spinal Cord Injury (SCI)?
A spinal cord injury is usually a result of trauma to the spine often from a road traffic accident or a fall. This trauma causes a complete or incomplete tear of the spinal cord leading to loss of sensation and muscle power below the level of the injury. Spinal cord damage can also be due to other causes such as tumours and spina bifida.
The aims of neurological physiotherapy treatment will differ in relation to the level of your spinal cord injury, and whether or not your injury is complete or incomplete.
