At SP Therapy Services, we take a compassionate, client-led approach to treating FND

What is Functional Neurological Disorder (FND)?

FND is a condition that affects how the brain and body communicate. It causes neurological symptoms such as:

  • Weakness or paralysis
  • Seizures or non-epileptic attacks
  • Movement disorders (e.g. tremors, gait disturbances)
  • Sensory symptoms (e.g. numbness or tingling)
  • Fatigue, dizziness, and pain

Unlike other neurological conditions, FND is not caused by structural damage to the nervous system. However, the symptoms are very real and can have a profound impact on daily life.

  • Our Approach to FND Physiotherapy

At SP Therapy Services, we take a compassionate, client-led approach to treating FND. Our goal is to help individuals:

    • Understand their condition without stigma
    • Rebuild confidence in movement and daily function
    • Reduce fear and avoidance behaviours
    • Improve mobility, coordination, and stamina
    • Set and achieve realistic, functional goals

We work alongside wider multidisciplinary teams, including psychologists, neurologists, occupational therapists and GPs, to provide joined-up care. Our approach is in line with current clinical guidelines and evidence-based recommendations for treating FND.

  • Supporting Clients at Home

We know that many people with FND struggle to access clinic-based services or feel overwhelmed by unfamiliar environments. That’s why we bring specialist physiotherapy directly to the client’s home, care setting, or supported living environment.

By working in real-life surroundings, we can support meaningful, practical goals such as:

    • Climbing stairs or using mobility aids safely
    • Managing fatigue and building activity tolerance
    • Reintroducing hobbies, community engagement, or outdoor walking
  • Is FND a mental health condition?

FND is a neurological condition, not a mental illness, though psychological factors such as stress or trauma can play a role. It’s a disorder of brain function, and symptoms are real and involuntary. Many people with FND benefit from a combined approach including physiotherapy, psychology, and medical input.

  • Can people recover from FND?

Yes — many people with FND make meaningful improvements or recover fully with the right support. Early intervention, understanding the condition, and consistent rehabilitation such as physiotherapy can significantly improve outcomes.

  • How is FND diagnosed?

FND is typically diagnosed by a neurologist using clinical assessments rather than scans or lab tests. Diagnosis is based on recognising specific patterns of symptoms and ruling out other neurological conditions. It’s a positive diagnosis — not just a diagnosis of exclusion.

About SP Therapy Services

Reviews

Marie Oxtoby

I am the Chair/Co-ordinator of Bolton Neuro Voices, a small local charity. I first contacted SP Therapy Services in 2012 when I was looking for a neuro physiotherapist to help us pilot a new Hydrotheraoy Course for people with long-term neurological conditions. Since then Susan Pattison and her staff have helped us to deliver ten courses to a total of more than 200 people and to facilitate the progress of many on to ongoing Continuation Programmes. Her expertise and willingness to listen and respond to our needs and those of our very varied participants is hugely appreciated and our partnership has gone from strength to strength. I unreservedly recommend this practice.

Andy provided a very thorough and considered physiotherapy assessment of a client with complex needs. His report was to a very high standard and underpinned all immediate and long term therapy needs. Thank you!
