Home-Based Neurological Physiotherapy

What to Expect from Home-Based Neurological Physiotherapy

Emma Hayden is our Communications Coordinator and usually the first person you will speak to at SP Therapy Services. In this article, she explains what you can expect from home-based neurological physiotherapy and how our team supports your recovery.

Understanding Home-Based Neurological Physiotherapy

Home-based neurological physiotherapy offers an alternative to outpatient rehabilitation, bringing expert treatment directly to your doorstep. At SP Therapy Services, our Chartered Physiotherapists specialise in treating neurological conditions across Greater Manchester, Lancashire, South and West Yorkshire. Consequently, you can access personalised rehabilitation in the environment that matters most – your own home.

What Conditions Benefit from Home-Based Neurological Physio?

Our home-based neurological physiotherapy services support individuals with a wide range of conditions, including:

  • Stroke recovery

  • Multiple sclerosis

  • Parkinson’s disease

  • Traumatic brain injury

  • Spinal cord injuries

  • Peripheral neuropathy

  • Cerebral palsy

  • Motor neurone disease

Because these conditions often affect movement, coordination, and independence, home-based sessions can feel easier to access and more motivating to continue.

What Happens During a Home-Based Neuro Physio Session?

Home-based Neuro Physio – Initial Assessment Session (1 Hour 30 Minutes)

Our detailed assessments are comprehensive and thorough. During this extended session, your physiotherapist will:

  • Take a detailed medical history and discuss your current symptoms

  • Complete a physical assessment of your movement patterns, strength, balance, and coordination

  • Evaluate your home environment for safety and accessibility

  • Discuss your personal goals and priorities

  • Develop a tailored treatment plan based on evidence-based practices

  • Provide initial advice on exercises and equipment needs

This thorough start means you begin your journey with a clear and personalised plan.

Home-Based Neuro Physio – Follow-Up & Subsequent Treatment Sessions (1 Hour)

Follow-up sessions usually last one hour. They focus on progression and refinement of your treatment plan. Each session may include:

  • A review of your progress since the last visit

  • Hands-on treatment techniques

  • Therapeutic exercises and functional training

  • Education about your condition and self-management strategies

  • Updates to your home exercise programme

  • Equipment assessment and recommendations

We also set aside a short amount of time for note writing, because accurate records are essential for continuity of care.

Every treatment plan we develop is grounded in current research and clinical evidence. Our Chartered Physiotherapists keep up to date with the latest rehabilitation techniques and interventions. Therefore, you receive interventions proven to be the most effective.

Individual Goal Setting

We work with you to establish realistic, meaningful goals that reflect your lifestyle and priorities. For example, you may want to return to work, improve independence in daily activities, or enhance your overall quality of life.

Progressive Treatment Planning

Your treatment plan evolves as you progress.  Consequently, we regularly reassess your abilities and adjust interventions to encourage continuous improvement and prevent plateaus in recovery.

Am I Committed to Completing the Treatment Plan?

To get the best results, we recommend completing your treatment plan. This is tailored to your specific needs and considers the frequency, duration, and intensity that will best support your recovery. However, if you decide not to continue, there is no obligation. Please note that 24 hours’ notice is required for cancellations, otherwise a fee may apply.

Reviews

Marie Oxtoby

I am the Chair/Co-ordinator of Bolton Neuro Voices, a small local charity. I first contacted SP Therapy Services in 2012 when I was looking for a neuro physiotherapist to help us pilot a new Hydrotheraoy Course for people with long-term neurological conditions. Since then Susan Pattison and her staff have helped us to deliver ten courses to a total of more than 200 people and to facilitate the progress of many on to ongoing Continuation Programmes. Her expertise and willingness to listen and respond to our needs and those of our very varied participants is hugely appreciated and our partnership has gone from strength to strength. I unreservedly recommend this practice.

Andy provided a very thorough and considered physiotherapy assessment of a client with complex needs. His report was to a very high standard and underpinned all immediate and long term therapy needs. Thank you!
