Home-Based Neurological Physiotherapy

What to Expect from Home-Based Neurological Physiotherapy

Emma Hayden is our Communications Coordinator and usually the first person you will speak to at SP Therapy Services. In this article, she explains what you can expect from home-based neurological physiotherapy and how our team supports your recovery.

Understanding Home-Based Neurological Physiotherapy

Home-based neurological physiotherapy offers an alternative to outpatient rehabilitation, bringing expert treatment directly to your doorstep. At SP Therapy Services, our Chartered Physiotherapists specialise in treating neurological conditions across Greater Manchester, Lancashire, South and West Yorkshire. Consequently, you can access personalised rehabilitation in the environment that matters most – your own home.

What Conditions Benefit from Home-Based Neurological Physio?

Our home-based neurological physiotherapy services support individuals with a wide range of conditions, including:

  • Stroke recovery

  • Multiple sclerosis

  • Parkinson’s disease

  • Traumatic brain injury

  • Spinal cord injuries

  • Peripheral neuropathy

  • Cerebral palsy

  • Motor neurone disease

Because these conditions often affect movement, coordination, and independence, home-based sessions can feel easier to access and more motivating to continue.

What Happens During a Home-Based Neuro Physio Session?

Home-based Neuro Physio – Initial Assessment Session (1 Hour 30 Minutes)

Our detailed assessments are comprehensive and thorough. During this extended session, your physiotherapist will:

  • Take a detailed medical history and discuss your current symptoms

  • Complete a physical assessment of your movement patterns, strength, balance, and coordination

  • Evaluate your home environment for safety and accessibility

  • Discuss your personal goals and priorities

  • Develop a tailored treatment plan based on evidence-based practices

  • Provide initial advice on exercises and equipment needs

This thorough start means you begin your journey with a clear and personalised plan.

Home-Based Neuro Physio – Follow-Up & Subsequent Treatment Sessions (1 Hour)

Follow-up sessions usually last one hour. They focus on progression and refinement of your treatment plan. Each session may include:

  • A review of your progress since the last visit

  • Hands-on treatment techniques

  • Therapeutic exercises and functional training

  • Education about your condition and self-management strategies

  • Updates to your home exercise programme

  • Equipment assessment and recommendations

We also set aside a short amount of time for note writing, because accurate records are essential for continuity of care.

Reviews

"I have been a patient of SP Therapy Services for over 15 years and have always found the team helpful, professional and punctual. I can't recommend them highly enough for home visits. Lucie is my new physio and she's excellent."

"The physio team at SP Therapy Services are life enhancers. Not only are they excellent professionals- true experts in what they do, but they are also advocates, champions, and guardians of wellbeing.
My physio Jane has been particularly supportive of me and has helped me understand my own body, improve my strength and instil confidence. Jane does everything she can to help me improve but is flexible to real life challenges.
Juggling work with my energy variation isn’t always straightforward but Jane adapts each session as needed. And I’ve found every team member are all very good and caring.
I doubted whether going back to physio would do any good- but SP teams are the best of the best and made me so grateful to have access to such excellence. Would highly recommend."

"We have used SP Therapy Services for around 6 years. They provide an excellent service. Our Physiotherapist, Jane has been an amazing support to our son with the various techniques she uses to encourage him to undertake his physio for his cerebral palsy. Following an operation last year, his programme was adapted accordingly and his mobility has improved. Jane has continued to look at different methods to keep him engaged with his exercises, using dance, darts, Nintendo switch which has kept him enthusiastic. We would be happy to recommend SP Therapy, they definitely provide an efficient, effective and reliable service."
