Susan Pattison

Chartered Physiotherapist and Director

LANCASHIRE & GREATER MANCHESTER BASED

I am a highly experienced neurological physiotherapist with a passion for the rehabilitation of patients living with neurological conditions including stroke, spinal cord injury, multiple sclerosis, Parkinson’s disease, and cerebral palsy but with a special focus on head injury. The depth and breadth of my experience in adult head injury is from intensive care to community rehabilitation.

It was my awareness of the lack of community services that lead me to set up private practice in 1998 to meet this need. I describe myself as a people magpie and have evolved a team of talented therapists who share my passion and enthusiasm.

I am an enthusiastic supporter of UKABIF and in 2019 was awarded the Chair’s Certificate of Merit.

SP Therapy Services will celebrate its 25th year in 2023, and I am proud of our reputation for clinical excellence.

I strive to actively support my clinical team to be the best they possibly can and to share their clinical expertise by presenting posters at relevant conferences.

Rob Butterworth

Chartered Physiotherapist

LANCASHIRE BASED

I’m a dedicated Neurological Physiotherapist with a passion for empowering patients with the skills to achieve maximum independence and function. I prioritise helping my clients to make informed decisions about their rehabilitation and applying these principles to goals across the functional range, fostering self-reliance and confidence.

With a proven track record, I have helped patients build their exercise tolerance to achieve milestones such as sitting in and driving a powerchair for the first time or participating fully in a football group.

I work with a diverse range of patients in various settings, including their homes, gyms, and schools. This community-focused approach ensures patients can optimise their function in environments that matter most to them.

I have had notable success in building therapeutic relationships and trust with patients who have previously disengaged from therapy. By building strong relationships and trust, I lay the foundation for integrating other members of the multidisciplinary team, ensuring that even the most reluctant patients receive the comprehensive support they need.

In addition, I specialise in developing the skills of support workers through one-to-one training within treatment sessions and group teaching sessions to discuss the theory and practice of an effective exercise programme. This includes detailed guidance on handling techniques to reduce muscle tone and increase joint mobility.

Believing strongly in a team-based approach to physiotherapy and rehabilitation, I ensure that every team member understands the underlying principles of each programme, paving the way for optimal progress for my patients.

About SP Therapy Services

FAQs

  • How can physiotherapy help adults living with Acquired Brain Injury?

    Although every individual with an ABI (Acquired Brain Injury) is different, the main focus of physiotherapy is to improve a persons ability to move and maximise their independence. To achieve this a physiotherapist will work to:

    • Improve posture and walking;
      Improve balance and reduce the risk of falls;
    • Strengthen muscles, and reduce muscle stiffness;
    • Mobilise joints and improve the quality of movement;
    • Improve respiratory function and challenge the cardiovascular system;
    • Provide education and training to support teams and families.
  • How can physiotherapy help children living with Acquired Brain Injury?

    Children with ABI differ from adults in that their brains (their movement control centre) and their musculoskeletal system (bones and muscles) are not yet fully developed. ABI impacts on a child’s ability to control movement making muscles floppy (low toned or flaccidity), stiff (high toned or spasticity) or uncoordinated (dystonia and ataxia). Children learn through movement they explore play and learn about, depth, shape, texture, volume distance and harm by moving through their environment. When moving is difficult learning becomes a greater challenge.

    Stiff, floppy or uncoordinated muscles pull on the immature and growing skeleton and this can cause developmental problems such as scoliosis, contractures and joint problems especially in the hips.

    Physiotherapists work to re-educate more normal movement patterns and treat and manage the muscles to maximise the child’s opportunity to learn through movement, and reduce the impact of the pull on growing bones

    Our physiotherapists can work with a child at school or at home, we have physiotherapists working in our Greater Manchester, Lancashire and  Yorkshire communities.

Reviews

"We have used SP Therapy Services for around 6 years. They provide an excellent service. Our Physiotherapist, Jane has been an amazing support to our son with the various techniques she uses to encourage him to undertake his physio for his cerebral palsy. Following an operation last year, his programme was adapted accordingly and his mobility has improved. Jane has continued to look at different methods to keep him engaged with his exercises, using dance, darts, Nintendo switch which has kept him enthusiastic. We would be happy to recommend SP Therapy, they definitely provide an efficient, effective and reliable service."

"The physio team at SP Therapy Services are life enhancers. Not only are they excellent professionals- true experts in what they do, but they are also advocates, champions, and guardians of wellbeing.
My physio Jane has been particularly supportive of me and has helped me understand my own body, improve my strength and instil confidence. Jane does everything she can to help me improve but is flexible to real life challenges.
Juggling work with my energy variation isn’t always straightforward but Jane adapts each session as needed. And I’ve found every team member are all very good and caring.
I doubted whether going back to physio would do any good- but SP teams are the best of the best and made me so grateful to have access to such excellence. Would highly recommend."

They have never let me down, it has been easy to book appointments, and the quality of the sessions is excellent. Speaking to a professional who understands the condition, assess my needs, and comes up with a treatment plan for each appointment is priceless. Many, many thanks to Jane R, and the rest of the team."
