Who We Help – Children And Young People2020-08-03T22:45:39+00:00
It is important for babies, infants, children and young people to grow, learn, have fun, socialise and play so they can develop and thrive. At SP Therapy Services, we offer both paediatric physiotherapy and paediatric occupational therapy for babies, children, and young people.

Helping Your Child Succeed

You may have been told your child has severe cerebral palsy, or they may have a mild developmental delay – we can help make sense of these “labels” and see through to the child and how we can work together. We help children and young people by finding bespoke solutions to minimise difficulties, maximise engagement and achieve their potential.

Examples of the conditions we treat Cerebral palsy, Acquired Brain Injury, Developmental delay, Spinal cord injury, Selective Dorsal Rhizotomy (SDR), Downs Syndrome, Spina Bifida and other Neurological and Neuromuscular conditions.

If your child is experiencing difficulties doing things, an Occupational Therapist can help. Karen Vercoe is our paediatric specialist Occupational Therapist. Details of her skills can be found here.

School and College2019-12-17T13:16:42+00:00

We are advocates for your child’s right to be happy and included in school life. We will make staff aware of what help your child needs to enable them to be as independent as they can be in the environment. We will advise on how changes to the environment, or the activity, can make school more inclusive. Times of change can be particularly challenging – from moving classes to changing schools we can help with this process.

Hand skills2019-12-17T13:15:52+00:00

Our hands are important to reach, touch and feel, hold and explore, as well as to make sense of the world around us and allow us to take part in a whole range of activities such as reaching out to a toy, bringing a hand to our face to eat and cleaning our teeth, fastening fiddly buttons or writing.

At SP Therapy Services our Occupational Therapists are able to work with you and your child to help them use their hands in the best way possible. Our Occupational Therapists will consider all aspects of your child – what motivates them and how they use their vision and their sense of touch, ensuring that they are sitting well, or changing and modifying the tasks.

Equipment2019-12-17T13:13:46+00:00

A young person may benefit from using a piece of equipment to increase their independence and improve their quality of life.

Occupational Therapists are skilled at identifying the underlying reason for the difficulty and using clinical reasoning to make recommendations. This may involve working with specialist companies to complete an assessment, or it can be something very simple like a grip on a pencil, adapted scissors, or a rail by the side of toilet to help them get on and off.

Introducing specialists equipment can also assist in preventing bone and skeletal problems as your child grows. Seating and sleeping postures are crucial. At SP Therapy Services our input does not stop with the child or young person, we provide advice and equipment to help those caring for the young person to move them in a safe and comfortable way.

Environmental Adaptations2019-12-17T13:12:58+00:00

At SP Therapy Services, we ensure that the changes made enable a young person to be as independent as possible in daily activities and that those caring for them can support the young person in a safe and dignified way. The advice can also be given to the young person’s school or college environment.

Daily Activities2019-12-17T13:14:31+00:00

Our Occupational Therapists are experts in finding solutions to everyday tasks that young people need to and want to do. For example, grading purposeful activities by making a meaningful activity progressively more challenging such as learning to fasten big chunky buttons on a cardigan before small fiddly ones on a school shirt.

We may also develop compensatory strategies – changing the way something is done such as wearing a pull-on top instead of one with buttons.
